The Schnauzer was first registered in Germany, where it is acknowledged to be an ancient breed. The name comes from the German word for moustache because of the breeds distinctive facial hair.
Kennel clubs generally subdivide the breed by size there is the Minature Schnauzer , Schnauzer and the Giant SchnauzerAlthough derived from a common ancestor and sharing certain physical attributes and personality traits, notably intelligence, friendly personality and a mischievous sense of humour, the three breeds are classified differently according to the Kennel Club breed classification system:Minature Schnauzer - UtilityStandard Schnauzer - UtilityGiant Schnauzer - Working.
